Smith & Williamson has been advising families with substantial private capital and businesses since we were founded in 1881.

Our firm’s expertise covers investment management, banking, accountancy, tax planning, and a range of corporate advisory services for business-owning families. We also offer strategic advice on family governance, succession planning, setting up single family offices, family constitutions, and next generation preparation.

In 1917, a business-owning family in the gold mining sector subsumed their family office into our company, where their descendants are still clients today. We provide to them investment management, as well as accountancy and strategic advice. This model of ‘subsuming’ a single family office (SFO), has now been repeated several times: more recently in 2005 a significant part of an historic SFO became part of our firm for a similarly broad range of advice, accountancy and investment capabilities.

Innovation and foresight have always been at the heart of our business. Establishing a private bank in 1970 enabled us to take advantage of the major changes in investment management, following the deregulation of the financial markets in 1986.

In 1982, we were among the first firms to promote the use of bespoke unit trusts as tax-efficient vehicles for managing family wealth, setting up a unit trust management company to meet our clients’ needs.

As an independently owned, partner led firm we are able to take a longstanding view to our client relationships, which are reflected in our length of staff tenure. These characteristics form the bedrock of our culture and consequently many enduring business connections. Having long experience with non-domiciled clients and the issues they need to consider, we think internationally, and are able to advise multi-jurisdictional families and individual members, on a full range of tax, compliance and financial planning matters.

With 12 offices in the UK, Ireland and Jersey, and 1,700 people, we continue to provide complementary financial and professional services to the holders of substantial private capital, their families, trusts, and companies, both in the UK and internationally.

Investment does involve risk. The value of investments can go down as well as up. The investor may not receive back in total the original amount invested.
